Running down the dream

Living up in the Ottawa area in the winter doesn't exactly allow for the opportunity to run outdoors. Well, that's not entirely true I suppose. Some people do get outside and go for runs in the winter but for me the risk of injury is not worth putting to chance. Luckily for me, work has a a gym onsite that has a couple of treadmills that are available providing you are member. So every Tuesday and Thursday after work I go for a run. Not a very long run, only 25 minutes usually but it does get the job done. Recently after one such run I was approached by another gentleman in the gym. He came up to me and initiated the conversation about my pace and that he was quite impressed. I told him the workout could always be better but thanked him for noticing. He asked me if I was going to be running the marathon in Ottawa this year. I told him I had considered it, but had never run a marathon before so wasn't sure what to expect etc. Anyways we went into some further discussion about it and he was certain that with my technique and pace I wouldn't have any issues completing it. This got my gears rolling...again...

About 5 years ago I was really into running. I would go out every day and do about 11KM, it didn't matter if it was raining, or sunny, or even if it was one of the worst days for humidity in Windsor, I was going for a run. I sort of let the running die off as I got back into working out when the new gym opened up at the school but have always kept it in my workouts atleast a couple times out of the week.

In any case, I think I am going to start making a serious push to get back into it and get my pace as best as possible. If I can do that, I think that I may sign up for a half marathon this way I can get a feel of whether or not I would enjoy a full marathon.

Wish me luck.

  1. I believe we had mentioned sharing the common interest of trying to do 1/2 marathon together.

I'd love to, if you're still open to it?

I'm doing about 5-7 miles per run these days, with acceptable times.

Part of the reason for my continued progress of running, is because I seriously want to have that 1/2 marathon with you!

  2. Yes.

I have definitely had this on the brain as well.

Yes I am definitely open to it for sure!!
We need to develop the running rules/etiquette. I've never run with anyone before (other than army) so I'm not up to speed on how things need to happen. For instance, does it become an every man for himself thing, or is it a start together/finish together run?

I ask because what happens if we get out there start running, and then we find that one of us has a bit faster pace than the other (I'm betting on you being the person with the faster pace btw), I wouldn't want you to sacrifice your time because I'm sandbaggin it.

I guess it comes down to whether or not we are competitive with it or whether or just enjoy the run.

But yes, either way the plan does not change..we we'll do this, and the DTW/Windsor one is good because it's in the fall so we'd have lots of time to train (more so me). That's not to say there probably aren't more but then it becomes a matter of whether or not we are willing to travel to do it.

  3. Here's "how I see it" :)

We can certainly communicate our times over email/blog posts, so we can get a feel for our comparative times, this will help each other strive for: a) our best, b) similar times.

Going into the the run, we'll know what to expect from one another, and I'd say, if our times are that disparate, then sure, let the faster go forward, there is no slight intended, it's just a simple matter "we are not all equal" :)

My KEY prize, will be running for as much of the race I can, with a great friend!

  4. Okay cool!

I would definitely agree with this. I'm not sure how our times will fair out to be. As it is I still can't run outside yet so I'm confined to a treadmill atleast for probably another month. I am looking forward to not running in such humid conditions this summer up here.

I'm going to pull the plug on actual muscle building exercises other than abs. I won't quit hockey for this however but I don't need size to play hockey because I don't play in any contact leagues.

I'm honestly excited about this, and I really am glad to read what you posted above because it shares a similar sentiment that I have. I'd long to keep up with you, but if I don't it's important to me that you go on without me!

  5. Good luck Sean.
I have hopes of trying the NY or other marathon one day, a half marathon first for sure (my sister did in England). I'm already 36 and got to get back in shape asap but you've rekindled that hope in me- thx. Again, all the best.

  6. Lilly,

I appreciate the kind words, and am glad to hear that this post has inspired you a bit. If the first one ever goes well I will definitely do others (including NY since it's within driving distance of me and I have never been to the city).

I just think it would be a great experience after what I have heard from people that have ran them.

My biggest challenge that I will have to overcome is that I like to run with my earphones in. Not because I get bored of the run, but it allows me to channel my thoughts elsewhere. Most people like to concentrate on their breathing...not me. If I concentrate on my breathing I tend to over-breathe and in turn tire myself out at an accelerated pace.
